CATERGORIES OF NOXIOUS WEEDS
There are four categories of noxious weeds: Each noxious weed is categorised according to what action is required to control them.
Notifiable Noxious Weeds (W1)
Includes weeds which are of limited distribution or do not occur in the State, but pose a severe threat to agriculture, the environment or the community. The landholder must inform the Local Weed Authority within 24 hours of detecting a W1 noxious weed on their land. Work to eradicate the weed must be undertaken without delay, and the weed material cannot be transported off-site, e.g. Kochia.
(W1) Notifiable Noxious Weeds
Alligator Weed, Coca Leaf, Indian Hemp, Karoo Thorn, Kochia, Salvinia, Senegal Tea Plant, Siam Weed, Water Hyacinth, Water Lettuce
Priority Noxious Weeds (W2)
Includes which pose a threat to agriculture, the environment or the community and have potential to spread to other areas. The landholder must continually suppress and destroy these weeds, e.g. Blackberry.
(W2) Priority Noxious Weeds
Rhus, Opium Poppy, Pampas Grass, Lantana, Dodder, Cestrum (green), Castor Oil Plant
Noxious Weeds (W3)
Includes weeds that are so widespread that eradication is impractical. Landholders must ensure that these weeds do not spread to other lands and every effort must be made to reduce the infestation and /or distribution of the weed e.g. Fireweed.
(W3) Noxious Weeds
Fireweed, Crofton Weed, Thistles
Restricted Weeds (W4)
Includes weeds for which a prescribed control measure must be undertaken (e.g. sale and movement may be prohibited) e.g. Salix spp. (Willow).
(W4) Restricted Weeds
Bamboo, Privet, Senna, Wandering Jew, Cats Claw, Creeper Honeysuckle Cotoneaster, Onion Weed, Madeira Vine, Ochna, Morning Glory, Camphor Laurel
