Winter Grass

Family: POACEAE       

Genus: Poa

Species: annua

Climate: Cool conditions

Description: Although not seeded specifically for turf grass use. Winter grass invades closely mown, irrigated, intensively cultured turf areas and may become a dominant component. It will tolerate compacted soils but not waterlogged conditions. Winter grass is less likely to invade unirrigated turf areas cut at 35mm or higher

Leaves: Fine blades 2-3mm wide, V- shaped, glabrous, soft with a boat shaped apex

Flower: An open panicle with spikelets towards the end of the branches.

Seed: Seeds are commonly spread and can grow just about anywhere. Seed viability up to 7 years

Roots: Fine, short and fibrous from tillers, annual or perennial depending on situation

Control: Hand weed at the first sign of weed. When infestation is to large to practically hand weed then chemical control is required. There are numerous chemicals available to control this weed and they should be available at your local plant nursery. The application requirements are varied for each different turf variety.  Be sure to read the entire chemical label for  directions for safe use, handling, the application rate etc.
