Renovation

Rejuvenating a lawn is a task that requires manual labour. If the lawn is weed infested then, removal of those weeds either by hand weeding or chemical application is required.

Usual Problems of a tired lawn:

Compaction, Low cutting heights, Stressed turf, Intense wear

Relieving Compaction: The use of a garden fork, spike roller or coring (aeration) machine would be beneficial in the relieving of compaction. In clay soil areas the use of gypsum may be beneficial in the improvement of the soil structure and aids in the relieving of compaction. This allows for improved root development and thus a more vigorous lawn.

Fertilisers: The application of fertilisers is advisable at this stage as they can be applied and washed into the lawn. The use of organic based fertilisers such as manures and seaweed extracts with the use of a complete slow release fertiliser will provide the plant with an abundant of nutrients.

Topdressing: Fig 1. An application of a sand based soil over the lawn will provide an environment for rapid turf grass growth. The soil should be applied evenly over the lawn without smothering the turf. Then the soil should be allowed to dry on the lawn ( notice the colour change in the soil).

Fig 2.Then rub the soil into the turf, thus pushing new soil into the holes created earlier with the aeration equipment. Fig 3.The turf grass leaf should be exposed at this stage and free to the sunlight.

Irrigation of this lawn on a regular basis will improve the growth rate and remember the cutting height of the lawn should be approximately 25mm (1 inch) or higher depending on your turf species.
