Colourful lawns in Winter
Ryegrass
For that lawn lacking in colour and vigour through winter, Rye grass may be the answer. Annual ryegrass Lolium multiflorum & perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne are suitable turf grasses to over sow that tired and sleepy lawn.
Some ryegrass varieties such as Lolium multiflorum can be purchased from you local nursery. This grass will wilt and die in warm weather, thus allowing your warm season turf grass such as Couch grass Cynodon dactylon, Kikuyu Pennisetum clandestinum, Buffalo Stenotaphrum secundatum to come through in summer.
Establishment Method
Over sowing Ryegrass
Purchase certified seed, Over sowing rate 1.5kg/100m2
Irrigate the lawn a few days prior to seed dispersal
Mow lawn evenly and collect clippings
Evenly disperse seed over the lawn
If seed is sitting on top of the current turf grass, lightly rake over to drop the seed
Irrigate lawn immediately after seed dispersal
Lightly and frequently irrigate the lawn to allow moisture levels to be maintained through the germination and vegetative stages of plant production
As the plant develops reduce the irrigation gradually and introduce fertilisers, bringing your irrigation practices back to normal
For the best results irrigate and fertilise ryegrass on a regular basis.
Increase your mowing height to 40mm. This will provide the optimum conditions for winter lawns and colour.
