There are many varieties of St Augustine or buffalo grass available. These are Shademaster, ST85, Sir Walter and Palmetto St Augustine just to name a few. They are improved varieties and provide a great lawn.

Stenotaphrum secundatum prefers warm climate with an adequate moisture supply. These new varieties will grow in full sun to shade. Ask you local turf supplier for the a recommended variety for your area.

This grass requires frequent mowing to promote lateral growth.

Fertilise with organic based fertilisers i.e. manure based with the addition of a slow release complete lawn fertiliser in spring and autumn.

Irrigate the lawn when required i.e. depending on prevailing weather conditions. Deep watering allows the soil to be completely moist and is recommended rather than short and frequent applications. Deep watering will encourage a deep strong root system. Watering could be done once a week in warmer weather, depending on rainfall received.

If the lawn becomes spongy then you can scarify. This should be done in spring / summer when the plant is actively growing. Scarifying is the cutting vertically of the stems and removes the dead leaves and matter from the lawn. This also makes the lawn a lot easier to mow.

You can hire these machines on a daily basis or employ a lawn contractor.
