Turf
Bindii: Soliva pterosperma

Winter to early spring is the time to control bindii. This turf grass weed causes problems for children and pets. The bindii has an annual lifecycle. After seed germination the plant rapidly develops and flower production starts. The flower after pollination will develop seed that eventually spikes into some unforgiving passer-by.
To control this weed in lawns
increase the mowing height of your lawn
fertilise your lawn with a nitrogen based fertiliser and water thoroughly. Organic fertilisers are recommended.
Water regularly if soil is dry.
These practices will allow your grass to out compete this weed.
Chemical controls
There are a variety of chemicals on the market for the control of bindii, check with your local nursery retailer for the chemical that is registered for the use on bindii in your state/country.
For the Daring gardener
Apply to your lawn evenly apply an inorganic nitrogen-based fertiliser. Allow the fertiliser to sit on your lawn for approximately 6-12 hours. Then water the fertiliser into the lawn thoroughly. This will burn the weed and hopefully not your turf grass.
