Soil Organisms

Earthworms play an important role of recycling organic waste. The worm excretes humus which is an organic form of plant food. The worm has the ability to improve soil structure by breaking down organic matter into a form in which plants can obtain there nutrients.

By breaking down this organic matter the worm promotes a healthier plant. Many varieties of worms exist so enquire within your local area. Worm farms can be easily established at home. They require a warm sheltered position with a moist environment. Not to wet though, as this will promote unfavorable conditions for the worms.

All vegetable scraps and shredded paper is all the worms require. With the compost you can fertilise your plants, providing them with the majority of essential nutrients for a prosperous life.

Another beneficial factor of earthworms in your soil is that they slowly turn the soil (Bioturbation) allowing air to fill the pore spaces and allow for improved drainage of soil water.
