Pesticide Use and Safety.

Please read the chemical label thoroughly before applying a pesticide.

The legislative requirements surrounding the use of pesticides have changed remarkably in recent times and are ever changing.

The user must comply within the federal, provincial and local legislative acts. For commercial enterprises, the chemical purchaser & user must be certified. Training and qualifications must comply with the Federal, Provincial Standards.

Pesticides is the name used for a group of chemicals that provide control against plant pest and diseases. Here are some examples :

Herbicides: control plant materialFungicides: control fungi / diseases
Insecticides: control of insectsMiticides: control of Mites

Label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

A pesticide can only be used for the purposes which is clearly stated on the label. Any differing from the label instructions is a breach of the pesticide legislation and can incur possible fines and jail terms.

For commercial chemical quantities and purposes, a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be provided with the purchase of a chemical. This is a legal requirement enforced by pesticide legislation. The Material Safety Data Sheet provides more information about the chemical you have purchased and should be made available to employees to view and understand.

Personal Protection

All person handling and using pesticides at home and commercially must comply with the label and MSDS instructions regarding the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). The use of PPE provides the user some protection against pesticide contact.

Record keeping

The record keeping of chemical applications needs to be at a high standard to comply within the legislative requirements.

For example records must be kept on:

  • date & time of application

  • area sprayed, topography, soil type etc.

  • location to be sprayed and surrounding areas

  • climatic conditions i.e. temperate, wind speed

  • chemical used & rates applied etc

  • pest and host
