Water, Water, Water Everywhere "NO"!
It may seem like we have lots of water! as it seems to be raining all the time in the metropolitan areas, but we all need to remember that Australia is the driest continent in the World. So when we go to turn the tap on to start watering our plants we should consider some of the following points:
Are there any leaks?
What type of soil do I have? Is it free draining?
What types of plants do I have Native/Exotic?
How much lawn do I have and what type of grass is it?
What type of watering system do I have at the moment?
Have I checked all of my watering system for leaks eg hoses, O rings, sprinklers nozzles etc?
When did I last use my watering system? check to ensure that ants and lizards haven't built a home in the hoses and nozzles.
Exactly what do I want to water? Remember it is better to water the roots and not the leaves for most plants!
What are the temperatures I am likely to encounter, and what are the major winds and their direction? This will affect the amount and frequency of watering.
Have I got an irrigation system installed below ground level and does it meet the legal requirements?
Should I install a semi automatic irrigation system or a fully Automatic irrigation system?
Remember it is law that you are not permitted to have fixed sprinklers operating between the hours of: 9.00pm and 6.00am!
Will I work out a watering schedule? YES.
These are just a few points to consider when watering your plants.
