Hydrangeas

Hydrangea macrophylla

Hydrangeas produce a colourful floral display in spring to mid summer.  The colours range from pinks and reds to mauves and blues. The soil pH can dictate the colour of the flower. Usually blues and mauves are found in acid soils and pinks and reds in Alkaline soils. For a pink floral display you can add agricultural lime and for blue and mauves you can apply aluminum sulphate. Test you soil pH prior to an application of fertiliser.

Prune hydrangeas in winter just above two (plump) opposite buds. You can prune back quite hard to control the size of larger shrubs or light pruning for smaller shrubs. Mulch well after pruning.
